Greek yogurt: the benefits compared to traditional yogurt

Greek yogurt differs from the traditional type, both in its texture and taste, as well as for the benefits it brings to the body; particularly on the skin and the bowel (it is an excellent help for bacterial flora!) and, especially, when eaten for breakfast.

How is Greek yogurt made?

The peculiar creaminess and density of Greek yogurt comes from the high protein content. So, how do you get there? After milk standardization, i.e. after having brought the milk to a predetermined concentration of fats and proteins, four other phases follow:

  • Homogenization, which acts on the consistency of the product, thereby preventing the formation of lumps;
  • Pasteurization, that is the heat treatment which prevents the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms and stimulates the development of lactic ferments;
  • Cooling, which slows down the metabolism of lactic ferments and activates the thickening of the product itself;
  • Pouring, which eliminates the whey from the milk so as to make the yogurt velvety, dense, compact and less sour.

Greek yogurt: the benefits for the skin

While preserving the nutritional properties of milk, Greek yogurt is more easily digested. Gluten free and low in lactose, it is a nourishment that can also be consumed by lactose  intolerant people. Rich in vitamins (B2, B6, B12), probiotics, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, Greek yogurt helps against seasonal illnesses and to maintain a luminous skin. It can also be used as a face mask to eliminate dead cells (scrub effect) and to smooth the skin. Not only that: the zinc and the probiotics contained help to rebuild the natural barrier of the epidermis. A layer can therefore be applied in case of sunburn. Moreover, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, Greek yogurt is also a cure for puffy eyes and dark circles.
